Bodyguard

Do you realise, that if you follow God, you have your own personal bodyguard?
Listen to this:

'he is a shield to those who walk in integrity,
guarding the paths of justice
and watching over the way of his saints.'
Proverbs 2:7-8

Now, that's some serious protection! God is our shield - he'll shelter us, defend us when we 'walk in integrity'. So, our responsibility is to keep strong in adversity, to stand up for what we believe and be honest. Then, God is our shield. He will shelter us from what the enemy throws at us. It doesn't mean we escape from it. We will still be in the battle (otherwise why would you need a shield?), we will feel the hits but it won't be half as painful or destructive because God is shielding us.

He is, 'guarding the paths of justice'. God watches over those that are being fair and just, he checks out the way they are going. He is on guard, prepared and equipped for danger. So that you can keep on track, keep on the path of justice.

'watching over the way of his saints.' How wonderful that we are considered saints! As imperfect and how wonky our thinking goes sometimes, yet we are considered saints. That's what Jesus does for us. Cleanses us so that we can be pure in the sight of God.
God watches over us, like a loving parent, concerned and delighted in His child. He wants to see where you are and what you are doing because He is interested and invested in your life.

What a privilege to know we are not left on our own especially when our integrity is challenged, when being just is awkward, God is right there watching over us, protecting us when we stand up for what we know is right. We may not always know it, a shield and a guard may not be very noticeable to us, unless we are in peril then we will know the protection they give! Be assured, that if you are walking in integrity and justice, that God is watching over you, He is ready for if and when trouble comes.
He is watching over you, His delightful child.

Gifts for all

Proverbs 1:1-7

The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel:
To know wisdom and instruction,
to understand words of insight,
to receive instruction in wise dealing,
in righteousness, justice, and equity;
to give prudence to the simple,
knowledge and discretion to the youth
Let the wise hear and increase in learning,
and the one who understands obtain guidance,
to understand a proverb and a saying,
the words of the wise and their riddles.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;
fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Reading this I noticed there's a lot of 'to's':
To know
To understand
To receive
To give

The 'tos' explain the purpose of this book, the book of Proverbs.

To know - to have confident knowledge in, not doubt but assurance.
To know wisdom and instruction. I think we all would quite like to be a bit wise, to have a maturity in knowledge, but do we all like to be instructed?
Not many of us like being told what to do, but if it comes from a place of wisdom then maybe it's a bit easier to take. If we know the reason behind the instruction then we are more likely to take heed. It's no use being wise if our actions don't follow suit. This is why we need the mature knowledge and the instruction - to propel us into action.
This book will show us what to do and why, not just leave us with a blanket list of rules to follow, which most of us will probably not attain anyway. It is an encouragement to see the heart of God, and to become wise in our actions and words for our benefit, and for that of those around us.

To understand - to get it. To grasp the concept.
To understand words of insight. It's great when someone says something Insightful, but do we actually grasp it? Hang on to it and let it sink in? Or do we think, 'oh that's nice' and not dwell on it any farther? Insight is only of use when it is taken onboard and we allow the words to have impact on us. This book is full of insight, which is nice and lovely, but it won't make a difference unless we understand these words and allow them to influence us.

To receive - accept, take on.
To receive instruction in wise dealing. Now, here's that word again 'instruction'. You can't get away from it - life will involve instruction!
If we want to know how to handle situations wisely, then read this book! That sounds like incentive enough - who wants to act foolishly when they could be wise?

To give - hurrah! Now we all like to get something, if we are going to put in the hard work of knowing, understanding, following instructions and receiving input, then it's only fair that we get given something surely!

What do we get? What do we get?:

The simple - prudence. Now, even if you think you're not that smart, this book is for you, it can give prudence - common sense and good judgement.

Young people - discretion. Boy, young people, this is a real gift! Knowing what to do or not, and when to do it or not, to discern is valuable for young people. It is so easy to get swayed by others, to go along with the crowd and try new things in your youth. Trying new things isn't a bad thing, but use this book to gain discernment so that the things you do don't get you into trouble or leave you feeling guilty or bad.

Wise - increase in knowledge. Wise people always recognise that there's a lot they don't actually know. In fact the wisest people are probably the m,out aware of how much they don't know. How great, that reading this book can increase knowledge. If you want to know more, get reading!

The person who understands - guidance. If we take onboard and understand the teaching in this book, then we will gain guidance in our lives. In our excision making there will be greater understanding, and guidance. This book can help us on our way. If you're confused, unsure, debating an issue, then read on, as the answers may well be in the pages of this book.

So, reading this book of proverbs means everyone gets something. Gifts for all. No matter what kind of person you are, you can gain something from this book. So, let's get reading!

Overcoming fear

As a kid growing up I had sooo many nervous habits, I was a little bundle of fear. I was known as a worry wart. My family would even say, "you worry about worrying".
I would worry about making decisions or not making them - what if it didn't go right, who would be upset/hurt, what could happen? A lot of worse case scenarios played out in my mind.
As a kid there seemed so much to worry about, so much to be fearful of; Exams, school, people being ill, making friends, being late, starting anything new. These things plus many more concerned my young mind. It resulted in me being fearful most of the time. I had lots of nervous habits and I'd twitch a lot and didn't really know how to relax. My young mind was always occupied with some kind of worry.

I don't know why I was such a worrisome child, but I was. It did not improve as I grew up either or even when I started going to church. The fear remained. The worries continued, the nervousness stayed.
As I got older I got better at trying to hide it, I would be the one hiding in the corner avoiding speaking to people, or tidying up just to keep busy so that I didn't have to talk to anyone. I was always the compliant friend who 'didn't mind' what we do, when in fact I was probably to scared to make the choice. I still had the nervous habits but seemed to be able to keep them under some kind of control when not at home.

As I mentioned earlier, I started going to church. So, at the same time I started reading the Bible. After a while a came across this verse.

1 John 4:18
There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.

The first six words changed my life!
It was like a lightbulb went on. I suddenly realised, that in the areas where there is fear in my life, I am not feeling loved, safe, secure. I am without love in those areas.
I understood that I would have to ask God to show me his love in those areas, and at the times when I was scared and worried.
Now, God is kind and gentle. He didn't bombard me with all the things I was scared of at once, in fact he's still working with me on it decades later!

God has helped me overcome many fears since then. 'There is no fear in love' - Wow!
For someone who couldn't get through a day, or an hour even, without being afraid, I couldn't even imagine being free of that.

I have had to do my own bit in overcoming these fears. I have had to do the very things that scare me and trust God to make it easier. It's taken a lot of practice, but now I am not the worry wart any longer! I am so grateful that God released me from being a prisoner to fear. He can do the same for you too.
Trust that you are loved in the situations that scare you, believe that God is with you and will help you and keep practising. For me fear didn't just vanish when I read this scripture, but its taken practice, and repetition. I have often recalled this verse to mind almost as a war cry. I thank God for the transformation he has done in my life. I know he can do the same for you too.

1 John 4:18
There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.

2 Timothy 1:7

God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

the word of God is not bound

2 Timothy 2:9
'the word of God is not bound'

Hallelujah!

Gods words are; unhindered and free. Thy are not not tied down by expectations or limited by our fickle minds. God's word cannot be restricted, it has no limits.
It is uncompromising, unchangeable, unmovable.

When God has spoken, nothing is preventing it from happening. It doesn't matter what direction you take in life, what God says goes. You cannot run away from it, hide from it or pretend it never happened. God is true to his word. He is trustworthy and good.

Flee, pursue, fight and take hold

1 Timothy 6:11-12
But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called.

These verses talk about fighting for faith, fighting to know God better. You could apply them to anything though really, anything worth having is going to take some effort. You will need to flee from some things, pursue others, fight obstacles and take hold of the achievement.

Flee
From what is going to hold you back.
Elsewhere in the Bible it tells us to throw aside anything that hinders. This has the same kind of feel here. Run away from the temptations of life. The previous section had mentioned about the love of money being a root of evil, so this carries on from that. Paul is charging Timothy, and so us, not to be blinded by the love of money. In fact, to run away from such things as they take our focus off of God. If we are not looking where we are going, but distracted, eventually we will fall.

Pursue
Instead, pursue. How can you flee and pursue at the same time?
Flee - is to run away from something. Pursue - is to chase after something.
Paul is charging us to flee from temptation, and pursue what? Righteousness.
We can run away from things that hold us back, how? By being we are focussed on what will bring us closer to God - righteousness. Being right with God as our focus will lead us in the right direction.

Fight
Have you noticed- It all seems quite military terminology here? Fleeing, pursuing, now fighting. Sometimes in this act of pursuing we will come against opposition which we are charged to fight. If we see things we know are wrong, we are to stand up to it. We are to know what we stand for and combat it.

Take hold
This is where the victory is. Taking hold of the eternal life we have been given through Christ. It doesn't mean to literally grab it, but to acknowledge and secure this knowledge in our minds. This will engage us and energise us for the fleeing, pursuing and fighting we need to do because we know the purpose for which we do it.
